The fake version, which looked liked it had been developed by WhatsApp Inc, has now been removed from the Google Play Store.
Called "Update WhatsApp Messenger" had adverts and could download software onto devices, a Reddit forum suggested.
To any user, this looked like the real app.
It has now been removed from the store.
Users who have automatic updates enabled for the real app were not affected.
