How To: Boot your Mac in Safe Mode



Here's how to boot / start up your Mac in Safe Mode

You may need to boot up or start up your iMac, MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro in Safe Mode.

Starting up your Mac in Safe Mode can help resolve and isolate various issues. For example, if there is an issue with your startup disk you can boot it in Safe Mode.

If you have moved a file of any sort to the Trash and try to empty it, you may sometimes be shown a message saying that the file cannot be deleted because it's in use, even though it isn't. If you contact Apple Support of head over to the Apple Discussion forums, they may recommend starting up your Mac in Safe Mode.

What is Safe Mode?

Safe Mode can help solve a manor of problems, including:

- Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically

- Deletes font caches and other system cache files

- Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically

You can also use Safe Mode for those laptops and computers that run and use the Windows operating system. It can be described as a diagnostic mode of a computer operating system. Safe Mode also allows essential services and programs to start up. It helps fix most problems.

How to start your Mac in Safe Mode:

- Start or restart your Mac

- immediately press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard

- The Apple logo appears on the screen

- Release the Shift key when the login window appears

- You will see "safe mode" or "safe boot" in the upper right corner of the login screen, this confirms your Mac is in Safe Mode

Once in Safe Mode, try the problem you were having before and see if it resolves and works in Safe Mode.

To get out of Safe Mode once you've tested the problem, you simply just need to shut down or restart your Mac and login again once it has started up. "Safe mode" or "Safe boot" will no longer show up in the upper right corner of the screen.
