Apple's new iPhone SE is trying to attract the mid-range market. Here's all you need to know
This isn't the first mid-range iPhone Apple have announced. In fact, this isn't the first iPhone SE that Apple have announced. It's the second iPhone SE the company that launched, although it's not called the iPhone SE 2, just the iPhone SE.
Normally, Apple and many other companies, launch their new products and a fancy, star-studded event and millions from across the world attend but due to the coronavirus lockdown, this cannot happen. So instead, iPhone SE was announced via a press release on Apple's website.
The first iPhone SE launched back in 2016 and is the only attempt Apple has had at creating the mid-range phone. Although saying that, the iPhone XR was almost like that but lacked some of the features and wasn't as powerful as its bigger brothers. Now though, in Apple's second iPhone SE, this is no longer the case.
Think of the iPhone SE as the iPhone 8 which launched in 2017 because that's basically what it looks like from the outside. It retains the physical Home button which was removed on the latest flagship iPhone 11 variants. Keeping the Home button means the display isn't 'all screen' so you're going to have bezels.
iPhone SE has a 4.7" Retina HD display.
Like iPhone 8 and unlike iPhone 11, iPhone SE only features a single 12 megapixel camera on the rear of the device and that's no bad thing as it's still the same amount of megapixels found on iPhone 11. iPhone SE will also shoot videos in 4K, as can iPhone 11. The SE also has a 7 megapixel front selfie camera.
There's no Face ID because iPhone SE doesn't have a depth camera or iris sensors, which is what is used to unlock iPhone 11 using Face ID. It's still secure though because the Home button remains, Touch ID makes a return! Just rest your finger or thumb on the Home button and you're in. You can also use Touch ID to purchase apps and goods online and sign into secure banking apps, for example.
The fact that the Home button has made a comeback on this model is handy for users who may be used to older iPhone models and are familiar with the Home button and its other functions, compered to the new swiping gestures to exit or switch between apps.
If that wasn't enough, another reason why we're already in love with the iPhone SE (even though it's not out yet!) is because or its processor, or chip, depending on what you want to call it. iPhone SE is powered by the same A13 Bionic chip that's found in iPhone 11 and 11 Pro. This means you'll be able to carry out those power-intensive tasks like video editing and play all the same blockbuster titles from Apple Arcade that you can on iPhone 11. Hats off to Apple for that.
Finally, we move onto price. Something that everyone factors in before buying a new, shiny handset and sometimes, it the main reason why we choose what we choose because we all know money doesn't grow on trees.
iPhone SE starts at £419. Granted, this isn't the cheapest and you can get some pretty good Android smartphones for the same amount and less. But for the amount of features that are packed in and not forgetting the fact that this is an iPhone. We'll say it again: an iPhone. We're pleased with the price.
So, our final thoughts: we're all for the second generation iPhone SE and that fact its starting price is £419 means those who have wanted to own an iPhone but have never been able to can have a pretty good chance at doing so. Because it has the same processor as iPhone 11 means no one is missing out. And the camera? Yes there's only one but who users Ultra Wide and Wide angle anyway? Most of the time, you're going to snap a shot using the main camera.
