The PlayStation 5 launch event gave us a glimpse at the consoles and titles on offer

Sony's long awaited launch event for the PlayStation 5 happened on Thursday and it gave gamers a look at its latest flagship console: the PlayStation 5.

Previous versions of Sony's PlayStation lineup include: PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. There are also other variants including the PlayStation 4 Pro.

The PlayStation 5 is set to go head-to-head against Microsoft's new Xbox Series X. Both consoles are due to go on sale before the end of the year. The PlayStation 4 went on sale 7 years ago.

During the pre-recorded event, which was played out in 1080p HD at 30fps, we saw what the hardware looked it. During the event, many on Twitter referred to it as looking like a Wi-Fi Router.

There are two variants of the console: PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. They're moreless the same apart from the Digital Edition version doesn't sport a disc drive meaning you'll have to download games via the PlayStation Store, whereas the other version allows games to be played from a psychical disc.

Appearance wise it looks like a rather futuristic device. The main part of the console is black and it's surrounded by a curved edge which is white. The device also features a blue light that glows when it is powered up.

There's some super hardware inside of the PlayStation 5. There will be improved graphics, the ability to play games in 4K and it has a custom built Solid State Drive (SSD) which Sony say will help make it possible to reduce the loading time when launching into a game. Who knows, loading screens could be a thing of the past.

The PlayStation 5 also features 3D audio which'll work great alongside Sony's new PULSE 3D Wireless Headset. Guessing by the name, that'll offer 3D audio which will get you immersed into the game. The disc drive version of the PS5 also doubles as a Blu-ray player.

There's also a brand new controller which goes alongside the PlayStation 5. It's called DualSense Wireless Controller which is white, black and has that same blue glow that the console itself has. There's also said to be improved haptic feedback too.

We're still left in the dark about certain aspects of the PlayStation 5, though. Although we know it'll launch at some point this year, we're unaware of when it'll actually be released and that all important price.

Other hardware that launched alongside the PlayStation 5 included the DualSense Wireless Controller and PULSE 3D Wireless Headset we mentioned above. There's also a Media Remote, HD Camera and DualSense Charging Station for the controllers which allows you to charge two at the same time.
