It's time to say 'goodbye' to iTunes
Some love it and others hate it: iTunes. It has been criticised in the past for running behind other apps, with its oldish style and not getting regular updates.
iTunes was launched way back in 2001 and has been around for almost two decades. It's fair to say that it has revolutionised the way that we listen, organise and store our ever-growing and changing music libraries.
The main functions of iTunes will be all moved into separate apps, meaning you'll have even more native Apple apps stored on your Mac. The new apps will be: Music, Podcasts and TV.
It has been reported that you'll now manage your device through the Finder app on Mac where, from there, you'll be able to sync your device, restore and factory reset it, backup and update it too.
Even though iTunes is an Apple product, it did eventually arrive on Windows in October 2003 meaning users that didn't have a Mac can activate their iPhone or iPod and sync music to it too. For now, iTunes survives on Windows but we wonder is support could be ended in the near future.
Although many will be happy to see it go, we'll be sad that it will soon become 'a thing of the past' when people upgrade to macOS Catalina as it did really kick-start music management and the way we synced and upgrade our iPhones, iPods and even iPads. Of course, for many years you've never needed to plug your i device into a computer as iOS updates are done wirelessly over air and iCloud means you can manage your music and files and back them up.
macOS Catalina was released on October 7 and can be installed from the Mac App Store for free now.
