Elon Musk started it with Twitter, now Meta want to jump on the paid-for verification bandwagon
Meta have announced users on its social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, will be able to pay for verification to receive a blue tick.
The subscription service, named 'Meta Verified', will cost £9.96 ($11.99) a month on the web and $14.99 for those on iOS, due to extra chargers Apple add-on for in-app purchases.
'Meta Verified' follows Twitter launching 'Twitter Blue', Twitter's pay-for subscription verification service allowing users on the platform to get a blue-tick on their Twitter profile. 'Twitter Blue' was introduced by current Twitter boss and Tesla owner Elon Musk in November 2022, after he bought and took control of the micro-blogging company.
'Meta Verified' not available to businesses at the moment but individuals can pay for verification. The service is currently available in Australia and New Zealand.
Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has said 'Meta Verified' will help to improve security on both Facebook and Instagram.

If you choose to become a 'Meta Verified' subscriber on Instagram, the subscription will include: a verified badge, more visibility for Meta Verified subscribers across Instagram, in search and comments on other people's photos and videos, exclusive Stickers in Instagram Stories, says Meta on Instagram's Help Centre. Other features are also available and can change.
To be verified under the new 'Meta Verified' subscription, Meta have said usernames on Facebook and Instagram have to match ID documents supplied by governments. Users will need to have a profile picture which includes their face, too.
